"People can have the Model T in any colour - so long as it's black"

                       -- Henry Ford

Why is this site black?

Well... because I like black. :-). Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth. I also find black aesthetically pleasing to my eyes and my soul. No I am not an angst-driven teenager or a Goth. Black contrasts well with other primary colors as you no doubt have noticed by now if you are viewing this site in a graphical browser. Since kevininscoe.com exists to serve me (any benefit you get out of it is your good fortune) it suits my purpose. [grin]. Oh and since you asked (you did ask didn't you?) this has nothing to do with the February 8, 1996, Black Thursday. Despite the fact my web site in it's original form (inscoe.org) with a black background predates even the original Black Thursday (so I guess for a 24-hour period I was in compliance). Although I am against censorship I do support responsibility. We have to share this thing together eh.

History of Black

Literally, black means asorbing all light without reflecting any of its rays. Yet long before the physics of light was understood, the word black was in common use. In Old English it was "blaec" closely related to its equivalents in Old High German "blah, blach" and Old Norse "blakkr." In many languages and cultures, black was associated with evil (and white with good). In art and religion black signified despair, sin and mourning. Its use in mourning is very old and comes from the ancient Semitic custom of blackening the face with dirt or ashes to make it unrecognizable to the dead, as well as a mark of grief and submission. The tradition of today's funeral is the wearing of black garments or black arm bands to mourn the loss of a family member or close friend. Despite the color's many negative associations, in heraldry black, called sable, also stands for virtues of perseverance, prudence and wisdom. To me it signifies death. Death to one-self, myself to God's plans and wishes for my life. And hey it just looks cool too!
